Interest in OpenStack is sky high among enterprises, but its no secret that charting the path to a full production deployment is often much trickier than expected.  All too often, the elation of booting that first OpenStack VM in your lab gives way to a so-called "perpetual proof-of-concept" as a team spends time learning how to operationalize new underlying compute, network, and storage platforms and adjusts everything from hardware purchasing to monitoring and troubleshooting practices accordingly.

In this talk, we'll explore a different route that lets IT administrators can quickly provide developers with the agility of the OpenStack APIs + ecosystem by leveraging the VMware infrastructure they already own and know how to operate.

We'll cover five case studies of enterprise customers to provided detailed answers to common answer questions like:

- What are key points of confusion for a team of VMware admins who need to shift their role to become operators of an OpenStack cloud?

- what are the backgrounds + skillsets of VMware IT admins who have successfully made this jump to become OpenStack administrators?  Do they need to know Linux or python?

- To what degree do existing enterprise virtualization team roles need to change?  What new challenges arise?

- What type of target workloads are the most common to deploy early in such an environment?

- Which of my existing vSphere technologies/tools work in OpenStack?   What new gaps do I need to fill?

- What OpenStack services do I need for a "bare-bones" setup?   How do users phase the deployment of more advanced services (e.g., Heat) in these environments?

- What OpenStack vendors can I work with on this?

Attend this talk and come away much better informed about whether OpenStack on vSphere is a model that can help you get to OpenStack faster.
